Job Description Ford seeks to hire a full-time Patent Engineer to assist in protecting the company’s products and services with a specific focus on utility patent disclosures in the technological areas of mechanical, electrical, software, and materials, as well as design patents. The individual will work closely with a diverse and talented group of researchers, engineers, and inventors as well as a dynamic legal group—both internal and external—to build and purposefully prosecute the patent portfolio and strategy. This includes identifying patentable inventions; securing high quality disclosures; providing technical and legal analysis; drafting invention disclosures; managing IP challenges; driving and monitoring local IP performance; conducting patent training; and leading ideation sessions.
This position is located at the Ford Research and Innovation Center, is a technology research facility in Palo Alto, California. The center focuses on cutting-edge technologies and development of Autonomous Vehicles, IoT/Connectivity, Software, and Mobility innovations.
Increase YOY invention disclosures and high quality patentable applications
Lead IP sessions to harvest potential patentable ideas
Support inventors in the drafting and preparation of disclosures
Assist in the drafting and preparation of patent applications, including claims and specification, and the editing of drawings
Work closely with company employees to discuss potentially patentable ideas, conduct prior art searches, provide technical analysis
Create and publish IP performance metrics (e.g. disclosure evaluations, patent filings, top inventors, submission trends)
Train company employees in the patent process
Participate in regular meetings with outside law firm to discuss strategy and technical issues
Assist with other legal and research projects as needed
Analyze patents and technical publications by other organizations
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related technical degree
2+ years of experience in invention harvesting, patent preparation and prosecution, portfolio development and patent searching
Masters in Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related (e.g. Physics)
Relevant technical industry experience
Patent holder or Inventor
Registration as a patent agent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office
Litigation and/or licensing experience
Interest in taking the patent bar exam and specializing in patent law
