Job Description The Automotive Technology Scouting position is offered by Ford Motor Company in Palo Alto, CA. Ford Motor Company is moving into a new phase of its 100+ year history, one in which openness is at the heart of its future. The automobile is being redefined as an automated mobility platform upon which an ever-evolving set of applications is being designed.
We are a research lab within Ford that is investigating computing platforms, software & hardware architectures, sensors, and algorithms for next generation active safety, autonomous vehicle technologies and all other technologies associated with a vehicle. Candidates for consideration will be responsible for technology scouting and supporting R&D efforts in automated vehicle technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, sensors (lidar, radar, cameras, etc.) and other technologies associated with vehicles and mobility.
Ideal candidates are exceptionally creative, motivated, and talented engineers with strong interdisciplinary backgrounds. We collaborate extensively within Ford and with external partners, thus we require exceptional communication and collaborative skills. The candidate will evangelize Ford in Silicon Valley and connect Ford with the Silicon Valley ecosystem.
Identify new technologies and opportunities pertinent to autonomous vehicles (sensing, computing, software, algorithms, services, etc.)
Proactively perform reconnaissance and engage with new startups which can provide relevant technologies; track, document and assess relevant technology developments
Perform technical due diligence, execute rapid proof-of-concept projects to prove out new technologies, and present findings to management as needed
Support Ford Research & Innovation Center Palo Alto’s interdisciplinary portfolio of projects and foster an environment of open innovation
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science or related field
2+ years of experience working with one or more of the following technologies (embedding computing, CPU, GPU, FPGA, LiDAR, radar, cameras, GPS, INS, localization, ultrasonic, cybersecurity, light-weight materials, additive manufacturing, lighting, semiconductors, SaaS, machine learning.)
2+ years of experience with systems engineering; hardware and software
2+ years of experience carrying out independent research and lead projects
M.S. or PhD in Engineering or Computer Science
2+ years of experience demonstrating outstanding technical communication skills: written, visual, and oral
5+ years of experience with a working knowledge of wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, WiFi, DSRC
5+ years of experience in executing a project from inception to finish across multiple disciplines, e.g., dealing with sensor hardware, data acquisition and analysis, mathematical modeling, algorithm development, application implementation, etc.
Startup, incubator or venture capital experience a plus
Experience at a Tier 1 or Tier 2 automotive supplier a plus
Technical document development experience
Experience with the Silicon Valley technological ecosystem
Ideal candidates should be able to demonstrate leadership in One FORD (leadership) behaviors combined with superb interpersonal, teambuilding, and communication skills
Experience presenting at conferences and meetings
